Is there a way to update the widget after it has been deployed ?
To clarify the question, the code within the widget can poll a particular URL after some interval (week, month, year, etc) to figure out whether a newer version of widget has been released. But, then what ? Is the user supposed to go down the widget again and will it overwrite the existing one, while preserving any widget specific settings ? or is there a way to get the widget to downloads updates ?

There are sever error's in the access example block (the <port> tags are closed with </path>) and the first bit about widget javascript is there twice.

Thanks for pointing these out ghost - I've fixed the tag errors. But I'm not sure which bit you are referring to that is duplicated.

@data64, in the initial implementation there is no auto-update mechanism - although you can always write one into the widget itself.
Widgets are being standardised at W3C now, and part of the work there is looking at this issue. You can read more about the
Web Application Formats group and what they are working on - most of what they do, including pretty much all of their technical work, is public.

It is unclear to me how widgets can save and load data. I see several fine examples of widgets which appear to do this. However the Widget spec tells me nothing of how this is done. My only guess is that it uses an Applet. Yet the spec does not make any reference to Applets, nor if Java code is executed from a standalone Java app?
Where can I find more detailed info on widgets and examples?
Thank you

I think those widgets use preferenceForKey() and setPreferenceForKey() methods.

I think those widgets use preferenceForKey() and setPreferenceForKey() methods. - I agree with Jadd and I like to use them
btw. "Where can I find more detailed info on widgets and examples?" - I think You can search it on Tools menu.

Different tab colors is definetly a feature that could be useful for me as well. I was also interested in the setPreferenceForKey matter, but as minky has already pointed out is doesn't seem to work anymore.

Yes, you can upload your widgets to
http://widgets.opera.com/ then anyone using opera can download/use it

there is a typo (I guess) in the "content" part. It says "When a widget wants access to use Java content" in both the java atribute and the plugin atribute.
also in the table of contents, for the content atribute there is this link:
http://dev.opera.com/articles/view/opera-widgets-specification-1-0/#xml-securitywhich seems not to work.
actually now that I look at it most of the links from TOC don't work.

duncan, the arcade blog site is really great, thanks! I'm currently starting to work on development of some widgets and bits and pieces of support I've found there are truly helpful.
