Supporting IE with conditional comments
IE conditional comments aren't exactly a new phenomenon, but we felt that now was high time to publish Bruce's 2008 remix of his classic conditional comments article. Even now, with browser support having advanced greatly in terms of standards support, there is still a great need to support older versions of IE, and conditional comments help greatly in allowing you to achieve this without resorting to hacks.

An even easier tool to test multiple versions of IE quickly and easily on one machine is IETester at
http://www.my-debugbar.com/wiki/IETester/HomePageIt's still alpha release, and does crash on me here and there. Some quirks. But overall, it does the job and is great for quick IE testing.

"Your article on Dev.Opera regarding conditional comments was well written and well informed.
I would like to point out that it is possible to bug test previous versions of IE in Vista through the use of Microsoft Virtual PC running an XP sandbox. The caveat is that often this will require an individual license for each virtual OS that you run. Additionally, one issue that I have with the multiple IE installer is that even though I can now use IE3 though 7 on a single OS, the IE Developer Toolbar will only run on IE7. To get around this, I have a separate XP sandbox for each version of IE that I wish to be able to use the IE Developer Toolbar on. Not exactly elegant, but it works."

I must thank you for this very well-written article. It summarizes almost everything about this subject, and is also very up-to-date.
I must thank you also for pointing out "Using conditional comments to hide something from IE/ Win". That was great, and was something I was needing right now!

This article is gold. Great work.
It doesn't seem to matter what I do I always hit snags with IE that take me hours to troubleshoot. This article not only contains useful hacks, but conveniently provides links to sites that discuss these issues in more details.

Microsoft have a Virtual PC of Windows XP with IE6 that you can
download for free. The catch is that the license expires after month at which point you have to download it again. It's hardly elegent but is the method Microsoft recommends for those who need to test their site in IE6.
