Opera Desktop Widgets evolved

A preview of where Opera Widgets are heading: in our latest Labs release, Opera Widgets can run independently of the browser and become first-class citizens on Windows, Mac and Linux. This article gives an overview of how to install, run, import and debug widgets in our latest release.

avatarInteresting feature. If I noticed it correctly the widget can run independently without a central running component. Does this mean that you are also experimenting in this build with running the browser core in different processes as well?

avatarI like the idea, it makes it possible to run all the webapps as widgets too: like Gmail. The problem is, tese sites are broken, when running as widgets (Gmail doesn't load for example). I guess the browser.js isn't active in Widget Runtime. Is there a way to load it separately for a widget?

avatartomassplatch - not quite sure how browser.js gets in the picture here. Can you share your widget, so we can have a look?

avatarNo question making the widgets run more independently is for the good. That way developers can design widgets to be used no matter the currently used/installed web browser.

I have created a widget which is responsible for reporting me : remote machine usage.
The widget and remote machine are inside internal network : 10.xxx.xxx.xxx
But I have stumbled across a problem - how to make the widget use it's own settings for proxy, and not taking settings from the OS - i.e. one defined through IExplorer's -> LAN settings.

If I remove all values for proxy server settings (through IExplorer : LAN settings) - the widget has no problem(s). If I leave settings for proxy server - the widget is trying to go through specified proxy, no matter what I set in config.xml for "network" attribute in tag "widget" : public / private or both.

Could anybody share some light what I am missing or doing wrong ?

avatarVery great news!!!
But what about portable widgets? What if I'm using Opera-Portable or Opera@USB and want to carry with me some widgets?
Waiting for a good reply...

avatarI have few wigets but when i run them they land in task bar which is not good (especially if you have many of them). Maybe there should be a single Tray Icon to manage all running widgets?
